Across the world, and every day, Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) speak out for the rights of others. As activists, journalists, lawyers, HRDs risk their livelihoods – and in many cases their lives – to protect the rights of vulnerable, marginalised, oppressed communities.

PBI works across 13 country groups to provide direct protection and support for HRDs, to keep them alive and help their activism thrive. PBI volunteers accompany at-risk activists and communities, demonstrating international solidarity; PBI resources and toolkits provide the tools HRDs need to build capacity, defend themselves from legal challenge, corporate corruption or other needs; and PBI advocacy and influencing raises awareness politically and in the media about the vital work HRDs do.
